BG – as Bulgaria     Written by Matic Jerman

This exchange was organized with the CURAPROX company financial support

Yesterday I baked a delicious cake with natural Bulgarian rose flavour that I brought from Sofia. I can’t stop thinking of it. Actually of them – the people and all those five days that made our study not only academically more attractive but also full of memorable sociable moments…

Last-minute packing (nobody forgot toothbrush of course), rainy weather with unpredictable snowflakes, no sleeping during the night travel, missing practical classes at home – a perfect recipe for the best ‘school trip’ ever: the right company is the clue, and we were the best team at both sides. Our Bulgarian friends turned-out to be perfect organisers and that’s why we managed to see and experience so much in just 5 days. Sofia surprised us with its religion (Orthodox, Muslim and Jewish church close together) and turbulent colourful history (including Bulgarian Empires, Turkish and Russian influence and today’s EU reality). But when the night comes…it seems like every house in Sofia has its underground basement for parties – first night we ended-up in a fancy club with major, fashion models and important names from Bulgarian public life (didn’t know any, of course). And so on, every night, we had incredible night life with different music. This pumped us with energy so that during the day we were interested in everything, asking many questions at the Faculty Tour at Medical University of Sofia, comparing ours and their education and seeing how similar/identical goals aren’t always reached in the same way. For the first time we saw the antimicrobial method of iodine intracanal electrophoresis being used in endodontics. But dentistry was not the only topic we were interested in. When moving around by car, bus, tram or trolleybus (only helicopters and tricycles were missing) we had plenty of time to chat about everyday life, social and health care issues, etc. Some of us caught some precious hours of sleep on our way to a place called Veliko Tarnovo, but after arrival we were quickly awaken by a magnificent medieval fortress, lovely streets with copper handcrafts and unforgettable Bulgarian delicacies.

Bulgarian organising team (Kremena, Teodora, Lubomir, Reni, Stefi, Boian, Didi, Elga, led by the student Emiliya) was excellent and should organise some more events of this kind because they really have a particular sense for doing this.
After all, we are looking forward to be at the EDSA meeting at the Black Sea Coast in spring.
